Guide Dog Puppies
SA Guide-Dogs brood bitch Lyla (a Golden Retriever) gave birth to Nimble and her sister Nutella on Mothers Day, May 10th 2015. Their daddy (by artificial insemination) is a Labrador Retriever named Fisher who belongs to a USA Guide Dog school. Nimble is half-sister to our first Guide Dog puppy, Volt as they have the same mommy!
We collected her from GDA’s Puppy Block on Friday June 26th 2015, she started her formal Guide Dog training on May 23rd 2016.
Unfortunately, our beautiful Nimble was withdrawn from her training as a Guide Dog in December 2016. She has a slightly anxious personality that manifests itself as stress when she should be working, and an unhappy dog can’t work.
She’s now the happiest, most beautiful, pet Labrador. ❤
Patrick was born on February 9th 2014 and he came to live with us when he was 37 weeks old. He is one of five siblings, all of them black, donated to GDA at six weeks old – Parsley, Prada, Pedro, and Preston.
As occasionally happens, Patrick’s first mommy couldn’t complete his puppy training, so he finished his puppy year with us before going to GDA on March 23rd 2015 to start his formal Guide Dog training. He graduated as a Guide Dog on February 7th 2016.
Wendel was donated to GDA at about a year old.
Because he wasn’t born at GDA he didn’t get the puppy training other dogs get. They know very little about him as he was initially an SPCA foundling. In June 2014 he’d been at GDA for about 3 weeks, and he started spending weekends with us in order to learn how to behave inside the house, and he is now a working Service Dog in Grahamstown – he qualified in December 2014.
Our second SA Guide-dog Association puppy!
Born 9 April 2013, he is 100% Labrador – mom Jelly (a GDA brood bitch), dad Manny (a working gundog owned by a breeder) and we fetched him from GDA’s Puppy Block on 31 May 2013. His siblings are Legend, Lenny, Lotus, Libby, London, Lola and Lucy and they’re all black.
We returned him to GDA 14 April 2014 and he graduated as a Guide Dog on 5 October 2014.
Rhody was donated to GDA at just short of a year old.
Because he wasn’t born at GDA he didn’t get the puppy training other dogs get. He was also predominantly an outside dog with a penchant for dumpster diving and counter surfing, so a couple of months after Rhody started his service dog training, he started spending weekends with us (July 2013) in order to learn how to behave inside the house. He’s affectionate and clever, and likes nothing more than being where his people are.
In January 2014 he moved down to the South Coast of KZN to start working with his new owner!
Kenzo was donated to GDA at about a year old.
Because he wasn’t born at GDA he didn’t get the puppy training other dogs get and he was also predominantly an outside dog. In March 2013 he started spending weekends with us in order to learn how to behave inside the house. He’s so very affectionate, he could most often be found lying on someone’s foot!
In June 2013 he went down to Cape Town to complete his training and in September 2013 he qualified as a Guide Dog.
Our first SA Guide-dogs Association puppy!
Born 30 October 2011, collected from GDA’s puppy block on 22 December 2011, returned to GDA 19 October 2012, qualified 6 April 2013. He is 75% Golden Retriever and 25% Labrador, mom Lyla (a GDA brood bitch), dad Timba (a GDA stud dog). His siblings are Vinny, Vegas, Vossie, Umeka and Viking and they’re all yellow.
He’s a working guide dog now and we are SO very proud of him!
